In memory of Einat Tabori

Einat Tabori studied in UWC Mahindra College in the years 1999 – 2001. After graduating she volunteered in various NGO’s, worked with asylum seekers and refugees and was very active in the UWC Israeli national committee.

Einat completed her second year of medical studies In Hungary and hoped to work in underprivileged countries where medical help is most needed.
In August 2011 she went back to India to participate in the 10 year reunion at the college. Before reaching Pune she decided to travel in north India where, during a hike in the Pavarati valley, she slipped from a cliff and fell to her death.

The Israeli national committee, together with Einat’s family, decided to offer a UWC scholarship in Einat’s name. The scholarship will be an ongoing project to ensure that qualified students will also have the opportunity to experience these two years that Einat had found so meaningful.

As part of the fundraising efforts, on Friday 30 March, a group from the Israeli national committee ran a marathon in Tel Aviv at exactly the same time as a group of about 30 college students ran all the way down the hill to the nearby village – Paud about 7 kilometers away. At 17:30 we started gathering in the parking lot and together we ran the winding road down to the main gate. From then on each ran at his own pace. We were accompanied by students on bicycles that carried water and cameras (videos and pictures from the run will be later part of the scholarship’s campaign), and also by Oscar, Biology teacher and Einat’s second-year. After almost 40 minutes all the runners made it safely to Paud! It was very exhausting but everyone had a great time.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all the runners, in Israel and especially my friends from the college – this run will guarantee many students over the years to come who will experience what UWC and India has to offer.  I never met Einat, but I think I understand what this place meant to her. It’s not just the beautiful campus, incredible India or the UWC, it’s mostly the people. People like Einat whose life, and sadly her death, were tied so closely with this place and its values.

Thank you. Thank you to all those who ran, donated and helped with the organization. Thanks to you Einat – I’m sure you would agree that this was the most appropriate way to remember you. Thank you.
