Alumni profile

Julie Zimbabwe - Class of 1999

Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Julie was one of the MUWCI pioneers in 1997-1999.

After India she earned scholarships to study social anthropology and development studies in the UK, receiving a doctorate from Oxford University.  Her research about ethnic identity and the politics of authority focused on San indigenous minorities and environmental NGOs in rural northern Namibia, where she lived in a tent and out the back of a truck for quite some time.  A book based on her academic research, called 'Naming the Land', will be published this year.

Julie is now Google's Head of Communications and Public Affairs for Sub Saharan Africa, based in Johannesburg.  She travels regularly to Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Kenya and Uganda.  As well as being the media's interface with one of the world's most influential companies,  Julie has helped to pioneer a journalism education programme which trains journalists across Africa how to make the most of the internet for investigative reporting, and encourages digital innovation in newsrooms.
